It happens quite often that I meet people who phrase their attitude and work moral like that.

Those personalities actively suppress quality and depth of experience regarding your product/prop. Let me explain why it does make sense to strive for quality and what the positive benefits are.

The movie „Minority Report“ tells a story about how a very special human like species is able to foresee Murders. They see pictures of the crime to happen, which police personnel can look at on a computer, helping to find the suspects. The police department is so convinced about it‘s truth and effectiveness that they hold on to their foreseeing system.
The apparatus delivers two wooden balls.
One with the victim‘s name(natural color) and the other with the murderer‘s name (red color). Below a victim-example:

 

 

Now, why did the production decide to go for wooden balls instead of a piece of paper with a code and the names on it?

Why all the effort and expenses ?

 

Material and Form

A closer look does reveal the reasons pretty clearly. When the computer is fed with the names of victim and murderer, a piece of wood(A) is taken and shaped into a ball.

• Wood is associated with trees
• Trees with organic life and uniqueness
  (through the dynamic rings in it and all the green while carrying leaves)

Wood stands for

• firmness
• stability
• the characteristic to be modifiable into almost every desired shape

• Therefore, also to hold a message engraved

 

 

Establishing
Determination & Indestructibility

The basic shape of the ball has a rough surface now and is ready to receive whatever comes next. The letters of the names are being engraved now (B). There is no room for error or correction. Once written, it will remain there forever. To extinguish it, strong violence would be necessary.

 

Sealing the verdict

But the process is not finished yet. The ball receives a polished and a glossy finish which seals what is underneath: The engraved name and the beautiful wooden structure (C) All in one, what you get at the end of the day is a medium brought into a perfect shape with the strong and streaky character of a tree. Associating life of the foreseeing species with the those of the executive(court + police).
Information determined by something that has life and volume to speak. It‘s weight underlines the confidence of truth, it‘s size is big enough to get full attention and yet small enough to be fully controlled. It‘s volume establishes a body delivering a very determined sound if put down or dropped. The engravings are the very final, unmodifiable decision who is who, and the glossy finish closes the perfect foretelling with an aesthetic layer which conveys high value and completeness. It is absolute and will forever remain as witness for the case once opened. Who wants to doubt?

 

Summing Up

Coming back to the question I put in the room at the beginning – why the producer did not go for a simple piece of paper with a unique code + the names of victim and murder on it. See yourself for a comparison and reflect their impressions on you.

Which medium has more substance?
Which medium would you choose to impress someone, to convey strength, quality and 100% certainty?

Many things are subtle. The life-reference, the high value given by weight, shape and surface. But the most subtle thing are the engravings since who would possibly, actively think about why it‘s engraved? Our human experience saves a lot of information about physics, visuals, feelings, scents – in short: whatever our senses experience.
Those experiences can be activated and used by other people, to re-live such impressions.

The paper version (flat, edgy, matte, etc.) of the foretelling can‘t convey what the ball does, due to it‘s very nature (solid, weighted, shiny, perfect shape).
If one can master subtle messages, by caring about details, you can also master unnoticed influence in what people do or not do.

Furthermore, great human experiences are those of which you can‘t exactly tell why it‘s so great. It might be fun, give you goosebumps, feel good or simply overexert your mind and body in a positive way. What you use it for is up to you.
